Pauly D tries on the Pauly D costume

Kudos to Pauly D for being willing to laugh at himself. Also, someone I know needs to wear this for Halloween.

September 19: A joint tribute to Married & Unmarried Brothers

September 19 was always a great day when I was little – one day after Married Brother’s birthday and the day before Unmarried Brother’s birthday. Which meant that I got to eat leftover cake for breakfast AND dessert without any worry about it running out — because more cake was coming the next day!

Also, because I was a spoiled brat (a stage I’ve obviously outgrown), I usually got a present just to make sure I didn’t feel left out.

Anyway, I’ve said it before, but I can’t say it often enough. I have the two greatest brothers in the world. All I can do is wish them both all the happiness in the world as they grow older and combat receding hairlines.

In which Ellie and I discuss our first meeting and she shares an email from a student.

me: what should the first sentence of a letter of recommendation be

“i’m writing to you to heartily recommend X for Y?”

Ellie: i usually say something about how i know the person

like i tell a little story

“I first met Karen Untereker in September, 2001, when she walked into my dorm looking needy”

me: omigosh ellie

that is not how we met

i was trying to get into the dorm

and you lent me your ID

you were wearing green shorts

Ellie: “I first met Karen Untereker when she borrowed my ID card to get into our dorm. It was the beginning of a long and lopsided friendship”

that kind of thing

i was not wearing green shorts

me: “I first met Ellie when she let me into our dorm early in the morning; I was under the (later mistaken) impression she was really on top of things”

Ellie: i don’t own green shorts

me: you were wearing green shorts with white trim

like athletic shorts

Ellie: “my first impression of her was spot on. she is the most organized, most generous person i have ever had the pleasure of knowing”

i don’t think those were mine

i probably stole them from alice

me: ew, who borrows shorts from someone else their first week of college?

what a creep-o

Ellie: first day of college!

look at the email i just got from a student

this is not a joke

“Today i found out I am going to be missing english tomoro for an orthidontist apointment. We have already changed the date of my apointment several times so tomoro i have to go. Please let me know what you want me to do with my canyon story since I will be missing peer editing.”

me: oh god

ellie

he doesn’t spell that way

fyi, that’s why i can’t be a teacher

i would die

Some things I’ve been meaning to share

Okay, I’ve been meaning to post these for a bit. Each link is something I toyed with giving its own post. But I’m busy with work and too lazy to take the time.

Click the links… you’ll enjoy.

My middle school theater career

I used to be a big deal in our community youth theater group.  If by “big deal,” you mean “significantly taller than my peers and thus forced to play a mom in the 7th grade.”  I started in 4th grade, and I, in fact, met Liz there. In 4th grade, Liz had a better part than I. That would be the last time. In 5th, 6th, and 7th grades, Liz and I had parts of equal level.  And then Anne of Green Gables happened and we experienced a major divide between the theatrically gifted (me) and the drama hoi paloi (Liz). Looks like the wound is still wide open.

me: [Redacted former castmate from middle school theater group’s Facebook status] Upper Darby High Schoolers: AUDITIONS tomorrow and Wednesday for the fall play production of “Anne of Green Gables!” 4:00 on both days. Please choose either day to attend auditions. Callbacks, if necessary, will be held on Thursday at 4:00. WOOOOOOOOO!

you should ask [redacted] who she casts as the swings

and offer to coach them to greatness

you may not remember this, but in anne of green gables

i had a major role

Liz: you could ask her if any dorky young girls need help learning how to act like old women

me: OUCH

LIZ

i feel like you might still be bitter

about your inferior role

Liz: whatever

i was gertie pie for 2 nights

me: oh i was mrs. barry for 4 nights

b/c my part was so important

that it was double cast

i don’t’ know if you remember that

Liz: whatever

i confronted alison about her bulemia

so much cooler

me: oh i didn’t have time for stuff backstage

b/c i was on stage so often

w/ my huge part

that was so important

Liz: while i continued getting cooler backstage

me: well you were back there a lot

Liz: being cool

and trash talking nerds who played adults

me: easy to be cool when you’re not under the hot spotlight

Liz: wow

me: i’ve really enjoyed this exchange

i’ll probably blog it

Liz: nerds do like to blog conversations with their cooler friends

to prove they aren’t complete nerds

me: wow

seems like you’re really upset about this
