In what context could this sentence possibly make sense?

One of the downsides of having poor hearing (besides, you know, not hearing well) is you don’t get to listen in on other people’s conversations!  However, tonight, I overheard this guy say:

When the parents are being that piss poor, your exceptionalism isn’t going to converge with their quirks.

What the hell does that even mean?  Officially for the rest of my life, when asked what my greatest regrets are, one of them will be not stopping that guy and asking him what he was talking about.

JAPANARAMA MONDAY: McDonald’s Japan stereotypes against Americans

Apparently we’re all nerds from Ohio (thanks for helping to set the nation straight, Unmarried Brother…).  This McDonald’s ad campaign is all about a bumbling nerd who mispronounces his Japanese.

Also:

Mr. James is an incoherent and painfully annoying simpleton. He stars in a number of spots in this campaign, going to McDonald’s locations all over Japan and musing about his favorite burgers. He even has a blog, on which he goes into deep background about his Ohio birthplace and about how he loves to shower foreigners with cash.

Some Americans are very offended, but you can read all the details here.

Thanks, @schellular!

JAPANARAMA MONDAY: What’s more Japanese than Hideki Matsui?

The Yankees clinched the AL East yesterday… thanks in large part to Hideki Matsui’s two-run sixth inning single.

Thank you, Hideki-san, for your most honorable service to my beloved Yankees!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Why?

Here’s hint #1:

Not sure yet?  Here’s another hint:

That’s right!  It’s Yankees post-season!!!  You may have forgotten because it’s been a whole two years since we were last here.  Sigh.

My only problem with this one is that I didn’t think of it first!

Of course, the whole hot dog/hot dog bun conversation made me think of Steve Martin in Father of the Bride… wonder if that’s available for instant view on Netflix…
